Premier steps into bypass impasse
Premier steps into bypass impasseThe Tasmanian Premier will talk to Aborigines about their opposition to the Brighton bypass.
Community leaders say the bypass could damage Aboriginal artefacts and work should stop.
The Premier David Bartlett says he will look for common ground when he discusses issues on Thursday.
Michael Mansell, from the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, says he will seek a promise to keep bulldozers out of certain areas so more research can be done.
But he wants work stopped for at least another week.
“[So] that we can take scrapings off the top of the soil and the sub-surface just to make sure there’s no Aboriginal heritage in the area.
“So, that’s an offer we’re going to put to him and he may have different ones himself,” he said.
