More women appointed to company boards

More women appointed to firm boardsNew figures show the number of women appointed to top gang boards has increased significantly in the past six months.

Figures become visible 24 per cent of all ASX 200 board appointees so far this year were female compared to just 5 per cent in 2009.

Steve Burrell from the Australian Institute of Company Directors says it is element of a push to increase diversity.

He says companies benefit from separate perspectives.

“There’s been a lot of research overseas which indicates that boards which are more diverse in terms of gender and in conditions of the background of people who are sitting on those the stage actually improve business performance,” he said.

“So it’s not fair-minded a question of equality.

“Diversity on boards is important because it brings diverse perspectives. It breaks up that idea of a closed club and arrange think and so on.

“In other words people bring different perspectives, contrasted skills, different ideas and experiences in their lives to the board table.”
