* The Hong Kong dollar edged lower against the U.S. dollar on

Friday, but trading was confined to a narrow range ahead of the

release of a key U.S. employment report later in the day.

‘The spot and forwards rates didn’t move much as people are

looking ahead to U.S. jobs data for fresh leads,’ one dealer

said. ‘If the figures come out stronger than expected, it would

support the U.S. dollar and raise expectations for early

tightening from the Federal Reserve.’

* The local currency traded between 7.7553 and 7.7559

during the session, slightly softer than Thursday’s rate.

* The U.S. non-farm payrolls report for December is scheduled

for release at 1330 GMT.

Economists polled by Reuters expect the report to show no

jobs were lost — the best result since the economy tumbled into

recession to years ago.

* The Hong Kong dollar is pegged at 7.80 to the U.S. dollar

but can trade between 7.75 and 7.85.

* Local interbank rates held steady from the previous

session.

The three-month and one-year Hibors were fixed at 0.13000

percent and 0.62857 percent, respectively, unchanged from

Thursday.

* Hong Kong stocks fell on Friday, amid worries Beijing has

started to tighten its grip on liquidity and will rein in bank

lending and property purchases.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index had slid 0.17 percent

by the midday break, while the China Enterprises Index of

top locally listed mainland Chinese stocks was down 0.78

percent.
