I am a african-american male and I am in 8th grade. I would like to pursue a career in Investment Banking or Medicine, which are my 2 choices, being black, people have told me that you won't succeed in a Business Career because their are no blacks in this profession. SO DO YOU THINK A BLACK MAN CAN SUCCEED IN INVESTMENT BANKING?

To answer your question, yes.

Your ability to do something is not contingent upon the color of your skin, but rather how much you want to accomplish your goals and how far you are willing to accomplish them.

I have several friends who are investment bankers and a lot of them are Black. Stan O'Neal, who was the former CEO of Merrill Lynch (one of the largest Investment Banks in the world) was certainly a Black man!

You just need to be more confident, and work towards that end.

Make sure that you work hard at Math and English and have good communication skills. do well at school and aim to get into a good college. Work towards getting an undergraduate degree in economics, finance or accounting.

After that, you can either work on writing some exams that Investment Banking firms look for, or plan on getting an MBA from a good school.

If you do a good enough job, both of these will certainly get you an Investment Banking job!

But I would also ask you one thing — why do you want to be an Investment Banker? You should choose a profession because it truly enthralls you. doing so will make it easier for you to accomplish your goals.

Yes. go for it. Besides, there are plenty of black people in that career.

do your research and see that there are quite a few all ready.

If you have the right stuff, you could do it. though, it isn't a very pleasant career – you have no life whatsoever. if you just want cash, whatever!

I'd suggest seeing your guidance counsellor to help you pick the right career. Don't be baited into well-paying jobs just because of the fact that they pay real high. You may find yourself highly dissatisfied and lost!

Back to the main question: A black man CAN succeed in investment banking. I haven't seen many in the field, though.

I live in a town, with almost no black people…. yep.. we are almost all white's…..
but 2 of the handful of blacks are holding the following positions: doctors(male) in our hospital, and one banker (female)… they are well respected like their colleagues. And we refer to them not by their skin colour, but their name…. like everyone else… They got hired because of their credentials, not their skin colour…

Dude, I am a very white woman and I absolutely think you can be an investment banker… go for it.. haven't you noticed a black man is running for President and seems to be doing quite well. Dream big!!

Do you think you can sucees in that profession? That is all that matters. I know several sucessful black men in all sorts of professions. Doctors, lawyers, investment bankers, college professors, engineers just to name a few. it is a difficult industry, and alot of people aren't successful, but race isn't a factor in determining that.

But keep in mind, you are only in 8th grade. There may be careers out there you haven't even heard about yet that would be a great match for your skills and interests. Either way, study hard and learn all you can.

I don't know who fed you that cr*p. My Dermatologist is Black and an investment broker in my broker's company is black. And both are intelligent, sucessful people. I'd stay away from knuckleheads that tell you such nonsense.

You are black, so ask yourself what you think you can do, and there you'll have your answer.

If you chose to limit yourself based on comments that other people made, then it doesn't really matter what the color of your skin is. You are the only person that should decide what you can or cannot do!!!!

ANYONE can succeed in anything …if you set your mind into it, and a black man (and any other race too) can be anything he wants to be…even the President of the United States of America!!.
